A New Song for Santa Fe
As a professional group specializing in choral-orchestral chamber music, Canticum Novum occupies a unique niche within the classical music community of Santa Fe. Primarily performing cantatas, masses, requiems, motets, passions, and oratorios, it is the only group in Santa Fe offering this
exciting fare other than on an occasional basis.
Canticum Novum specializes in what it likes to call unjustly neglected masterpieces works that ought to be better known than they are, often by composers who should be better known than they are. (In particular, the group has presented Santa Fe premieres of many works by Latin American Baroque composers.) As one reviewer for the Santa Fe New Mexican put it, "The music tends to be enticing, out of the ordinary, and not heard anywhere else around." A reviewer for the Albuquerque Journal wrote, Canticum Novum devotes itself to producing masterful works beyond the usual played-to-death classical repertoire, and for that especially they deserve particular support
This is an ensemble well worth ones attention.
Music by and for New Mexicans
Northern New Mexico is blessed with an amazing richness and depth of musical talent, and Canticum Novum is dedicated to promoting it. With the occasional addition of guest appearances by well-known soloists from elsewhere, the ensemble is first and foremost an organization based on, and supporting, the talents of local musicians.
